Kukutaruhe

Kukutāruhe Gully lies in the heart of Hamilton City. The restoration of the gully has been heavily supported by the Waikato River Authority. Spokesperson for the gully project Vic Arcus tells us about what makes the gully unique, and why the restoration is important for the community and for the Waikato River.

    This short observational documentary is about the annual kūmara (sweet potato) harvest at Te Parapara Garden at the Hamilton Gardens in Kirikiriroa Hamilton, Aotearoa New Zealand.

    Wiremu Puke, a tohunga whakairo (master-carver) and tohunga whakapapa (ancestral expert), whose personal whakapapa is is through predominately Ngaati Porou iwi (tribe) of East Cape and to the hapuu (sub-tribe) Ngaati Wairere of Tainui iwi (tribe), designed and led a small team of carvers in the construction of the only Pre-European styled Maaori garden of its kind in the world: Te Parapara Garden at the Hamilton Gardens.
